Average age of woodburners? That's an ambiguous question. Age of the wood burner? (My response - old.) How long has one been burning wood fires? How long since the last upgrade to the fireplace/stove/insert? ...Starting time of a SuperCedar?....

Was surprised at two findings on the chart thus far:

1) That most of the users are between 20 and 60
2) That those over 60, are very few.

Wonder what that says about the "older" folks? Tired of luggin wood? Have a "been there/done that" approach?

62 and been burning for 36 years.

32...HERE. new to the burning game. Used to help with my parents stove years back though.

Thought I would be the youngest, I was wrong. 24, was 23 when I got the insert. Fiance is 23, both love doin stuff outside, might as well make it worth it!

I just got out the calculator and figured out that my average age is 62.

El wrongo, calculator breath! Your average age is (1+2+3+... 62)/62 = 31. Feel younger now?

When it comes to being smart a$$, I'm afraid you're bringing a knife to a gun fight, good sir.

EDIT: Well, at least when it comes to being an a$$...

You must have been a hedge fund manager.

Number of people = 1

Total age of the people = 62

Average age of the people = (62/1) = 62

Yes, I would like fries with that.

No, I was much worse than a hedge fund manager--I was an engineering graduate student.

The calculation you made was for a group of people with only you in it. Yes, the average age of a group with only you in it is 62.

But you said your average age--the average age of you as individual. That is a different calculation:

You were 0 for one year, 1 for one year, two for one year... 62 for one year. When you average your age over all those years your average age is (1+2+3+... 62)/62 = (31*62)/62 = 31 ==> your average age = 31. Check it on your calculator if you like.

In other words, half your life you have been younger than 31, half older.

I do not have a life, and I can do this forever. Resistance is futile.

And I never inhaled, never had sex with that woman Monica Lewinsky, and it all depends on what your definition of "is" is.

Age = 64. I was surprised at the age distribution, but I think Billy's suggestion is a good one. Old folks (especially those who live in rural areas) are less likely to be internet users.

I'm surprised at the low average age too. I always thought wood burners were a bunch of old folks, and I'd be the young one. Maybe wood burning is more dangerous than I thought--"Live fast, leave a charred corpse"?

Is there an easy way to add an averaging function (glancing at BrotherBart) to the results panel? Eyeballing, it looks like the low 40s.

34 years old
~ 30 of them living with a stove of some sort (though I doubt my dad let me load it at 4 ;) )

28 here.... burning for 4 years.... love it!

Results are skewed heavily toward people who are willing to respond to polls.

kathleen- I call BS on you. :cheese:

gals over the age of 21 dont usually exaggerate their age upward :)

I guess the follow-up poll should be, How long do you think you'll be burning wood?

What's the cutoff for old?
If you have to ask, you are probably not old :)
So, I assume what you're saying is, when you're old you know it.
. . . or, you're just being kind.

Just turned 29.... been burning wood for ever, I've been told I knew how to start a fire in the stove before I could walk :p......

Owning my first House / stove since 2 year with wood cut on my piece of dirt !

Yep, you'll know it. I don't think age necessarily has anything to do with it. There are some "old timers" on here that sure aren't old in my book.

37 and my first year.. always liked fires, but realized after i bought my house in Feb 2010, the family room was always 5 to 10 degrees colder than the rest of the house. Replaced the fireplace with a Napoleon 1402 insert. I love having a room today at 77 degrees versus having a room last year at 67 degrees after running a 1500 Watt electric heater for 12 hours... Wood can put out so much more BTU vs electric it's staggering... my 2 cents...

Great quote Woodjack! I like to think that wood burning helps to keep me young.
