I use mine every day to make kindling to start the fire. They wont take the place of a gas splitter IMO

I'll second that. My father has one, and I'll admit I kind of laughed when I saw it. Then he showed me what it could split. He put a big, nasty piece of maple in it that I had been flogging on with my maul to little avail, and it split it like butter. They are slow, and I wouldn't use them to split any huge amount of wood, but they do split well. I can see where they would have a place.
