Anyone heard of this stove?

This stove is listed on eBay regularly. The contact info is Dick's Machine Shop, 1605 Prairie Ave. NW, Waukon, IA 52172. It looks to be built like a tank, but I can't see how it could be real efficient? The exhaust temps seem on par with a gasser? Is that possible?

I usually read the boiler room, but thought this fit better here. I tried a search with no luck. I need to heat a 60x40 well insulated shop. The link is http://www.jimbonham.com/Stove/stove.html

I want to open up this thread, as it has been 4 years since the last reply. Has anyone heard good or bad about this stove. Are his claims true? I have a 60x40 insulated metal shop that I need to heat. This past season I used an old Tempwood top loader stove that was just too small. Took along time to heat up shop, and only got to 50*f, which was doable with a hat and jacket. I like the idea of Dick's stove size, longer logs, less cutting. How is he getting such great efficiency with no refractory, in fact he warns that fire bricks are used to protect thin stove walls, and the heat goes up the chimney. He doesnt list the efficiency, but if he is heating what he says he is heating, where his location is, on 4 cords or "dry" wood, that pretty good.

any thoughts?

It might work fine but a decent wood furnace is half the price and should be more efficient. Claims like this: "Flame deflector to keep flames from shooting up the chimney." are suspect. Do you think Dick will be alive 50 yrs from now to back up the warranty claim? His statements on firebrick are total BS and makes one think that he does not understand efficient wood stove design.

This thing will make heat, that's for sure. Just like any steel box with a fire in it!
The fact that he discredits firebrick shows his limited knowledge of how a combustion chamber even works. This stove should not be anymore expensive than a furnace at tractor supply, unfortunately it about 3x the price and likely less effective.

Sure, just lay that galvanized right against the top of the stove.
And you can burn anything in it and retain warranty.
According to him, firebrick is bad and must be replaced yearly.
Shiester engineering at its best.

So I conclude from your posts:

the claims he makes are outright lies,

he doesn't understand efficient combustion theory,

He's basically a snake oil salesman

Man, looking at other wood furnaces his price is a bit steep, for such a simple design. Looks like I might give tractor supply a call

Thanks
Chris

I think he is more just a handy welder trying to make a buck. A lot of old boys think everything they learned 30 yrs ago is enough. Stoves have changed a lot during that time period.

He might be a great guy, we don't know. There was a time that anybody with a welder could make a great big wood stove and tell everybody it was the best. That time has past! Its a simple design, no more technology in it than an old Fisher. So much has been learned through testing, rather than making use of it, he discredits it and expects people to take his word for it. With all the research available today, this isn't a good approach.

Yeah, I think that sums it up.
He's a guy with a machine shop, building steel boxes to put fires in.
He's no engineer. He proves that with his firebrick stance.

But a giant steel box will have lots of space to radiate heat, I guess a plus...

For heating a big shop, I don't see how his stove is a lot better than a double-barrel stove which would radiate heat faster. This big box may last longer, but costs about 30x more.
