Cancelled my order on the Englander today. I'm feeling really down about it but it's my own fault. I should have read the online manual closer. According to it my alcove installation wouldn't work because of clearance to combustibles was too close. I even called Englander to confirm my findings. They told me that the NC-30 wasn't meant for an alcove installation and that is needed to be out away from the opening. Everything was ok except where firred the wall out for insulation. When we built the house I had this alcove built for a woodstove. What was I thinking? No one to blame but myself I guess. Lesson-read the manual BEFORE pulling the trigger. I'm done.

One more thing-I addicted to this forum. None other like it. Thanks!

opening up that alcove is out of the question? Fancy tile or brick work involved? A picture and some dimensions might help some folks around here to brainstorm and come up with possibilities with you.

I have a Lopi Endeavor in an alcove and it works great. I don't know if one could work in your situation or not, but there must be a stove that will.

Good Luck.

I'll try to get a pic. I already have a stove in there, just wanted more grunt.
This is a basement install so I can't move the walls.

If that is the stove you are questioning I would ask if there is 1/2 or 5/8 drywall behind the tile? Is the black stove pipe double wall? Would the extra heat shields help the situation?
Anyone else?

That's 1/2 drywall on the edge of the stud where wall meets the alcove. The tile is stuck to it. Hope that made sense. The rest of the alcove is tile on concrete.

No more ideas? That opening is 48" wide.

Clarification please, Tile on cement... Does this mean cement board nailed directly onto wood studs?

Looking for more oomph, but wasn't there a previous stove in there that had too much oomph? What was that stove?

Most folks add their stove model to their signature, could you do this?

sounds like tile stuck directly to the dry wall to me.

Tile is stuck directly to drywall on wall ends. The rest is tile stuck to concrete. Just 3 1/2 inches is drywall on both sides.

So is there a concrete, poured (or block) wall surrounding the stove? Please clarify.

Poured concrete with tile. Just the ends of the walls are drywall with tile stuck to it.

So what is the problem with the 30NC, ceiling clearance?

So what is the problem with the 30NC, ceiling clearance? Or the side clearance toward the front of the stove?

Side clearance at the front of the stove. I could redo the tile but I don't have extras. That's the problem. The rest of it is fine.

It's close, but this doesn't seem like a show stopper. I would ask if making a pair of side heat shields by installing a 2" piece of angle iron or bent metal, spaced 1" off of the corner would suffice. It would just meet the 12" side clearance with a heat shield. If yes, the heatshield could be painted to complement the nice tile work.

Otherwise, a big Lopi Libery or PE Summit should do the job with their closer clearances. Just shield the corners.

Thanks BeGreen. Don't know if wife would go fo the side shields. Too bad I can't put side shields on the stove. I have the means to fabricate just about anything that is sheetmetal. Maybe I could tile the shields if we could find tile that match. I don't know. Just about gave up for now. That price on the 30 is tempting but...................

Make the shields BG is talking about out of stainless steel and it will look pretty.

I may have missed something but.......you can put heat shields on the sides, you can order them pre made from Englander:
http://www.englanderstoves.com/store/30-NC_Parts.html scroll down to AC-30SHSB Side Heat Shield (black) (20 lbs. each)
Not sure if this helps you or not.

I think he's referring to shields on the walls?

Those shields don't come all the way to the front which seems odd to me. The clearances listed to the sides are the same with or whithout. My brain hurts!

well, how about you install those shields then pull the stove forward into the room a few inches using 2- 45's in the pipe as a jog?

IIRC the side shields for the 30NC are only partial. If so, that may be the issue concerning the Englander techs. The Summit and Liberty have full side shields built in.

A Summit, Super 27, or Spectrum would work there.
Manual should state:"approved for alcove installation" for any stove you install there.
