I have about a cord or so of Boxelder maple cut down and into rounds about 2 months ago. If it is split in the next couple weeks, will this be ok for this winter? I know I just did the same with some silver maple and ash, and i was told that it will be ok for this winter since it drys fast.

Quick 6 months or so, its alot like silver maple!

Boxelder is just a bit softer & lighter in weight than Silver Maple, dries pretty fast also. You should be OK.

Weighs a ton when first cut and a few months later its balsa wood.

Thanks for the fast reply's!

Ditto to what everyone else said. I tend to find alot that is hollow in the center- discard that portion because it will be full of ants, soak up rain like a sponge and generally not burn well. It does split easy and season fast. If you have some with lots of red staining in it (common) you might want to save some for the wood carvers.

I bet you will be seeing red.

I've burned a goodly amount of box elder over they years and have nothing bad to say about it. Yes, it can dry really fast. Get it split and stacked in the wind. Burn this winter.
