What is a good high quality come along? What to look for in purchasing a quality product and how much should I expect to pay? I am looking for a 3-4 ton capacity.

Also, do you folks close dampers on your stoves for summer storage?

This one should do everything you need:

The cap on top of my flue pipe is going to keep out the bigger critters, and it's hard for the smaller critters to climb the exterior of the pipe, so I'm not worried and therefore I do nothing. There IS no damper to close on my flue pipe in the house, so if any insect decided to attempt to live in the flue pipe, he/she/it is somewhat trapped. I've wondered about spiders and bees, and whether or not THEY would typically build a nest in the flue pipe, but also haven't experienced THAT yet.

I suppose I'll know, that first time I light a fire!

You might also consider a winch. They make portable winches and I can see where they could be very handy.

What you trying to pull?

I use come alongs to help direct trees that are leaning or to be sure they stay away from valuable items. Would a 2 ton come along be plenty for this application?

I dont like the come along for that application. Boat winch or electric is the way to go.

Yup. I have one I've used on occasion for 30 yrs, nice to move certain things a short distance on the ground, but I never used it in felling if the trees were anywhere near buildings or property.

Pushing those buttons on that 12 V winch is so much nicer on my old back now. ;-)

Forgot about your question on the damper. If you have a damper, then I would close it in the summer but if one is not installed I would not worry about it.
