The post about how long it takes to split and stack got me thinking. It really depends on the music I listen to. If I'm working fast and hard, it's usually The White Stripes or live Hendrix. If I'm splitting/stacking to relax and enjoy being outside it's usually Yonder Mountain String Band, Garcia-Grisman stuff, or Wilco. Most anytime I'm working I'll have "Sticky Fingers" cued and ready.

Any favorite wood working tunes or bands?

(Sorry in advance if this belongs somewhere else.)

Dire Straits definitely in the mix.

John Philip Sousa

I have my earbuds in a lot...whenever I am in the gym, doing some super-techy stuff at work, flying...etc. but I enjoy the quiet when splitting and stacking. Clears the mind...it is a mental washing machine.

Can't work without it. Usually I just open both doors on the truck and turn on the satellite radio-that way no matter what I'm in the mood for (classic rock, country, metal, etc...) I've got it right there with no commercials. One of the nice things about having a diesel is that you have two massive batteries-you can play the radio for a loooooooong time before those puppies wear down even a little. The only time I forgo the music is if I'm using the splitter or the chainsaw a lot-can't hear it so what's the point? I'm not that picky about what type of music as long as it something I like. I'll stack wood to anything from Metallica and Black Sabbath to George Strait and Hank Jr. Metal and heavy stuff in general is good for working with the Fiskars though ;)

Yeah, I am definetly one of those quiet sounds of nature types when out splitting/stacking.
I hear noise and music all day...

If I was going to listen to music, I might put in some Joe Satriani, Led Zeppelin or
Journeys greatest Hits.

Metallica- can split a cord in a half an hour:) at least that's what my wifes says::)
I think the formula should be ....any kind of metal is fastest, then stuff like Journey or Kansas is good........go to some lame butt like you saw on American Idol and its s....l....o....w and if you go to some C+W the wood rots faster than you can split it:)

Five Finger Death Punch, 3 Days Grace, Disturbed, or go Old School with some Offspring... yep, that will get it done.

I usually listen to podcasts actually. This American Life and Car Talk always pass time quickly. Also a big fan of The History of Rome podcast.

Love of woodburning includes the appreciation of the outdoors. For that reason, no music needed. Much of the time there is an engine running anyhow. When stacking I may put a ball game on, but that is rare. Wouldn't want to miss the sound of hardwood logs bouncing off each other.

After work I listen to the ball game. (HD Radio comes in great for where I am).
Other times, classical (bonus: no commercials).

The Black Keys are my current favorite splitting music band.

Eric Clapton for Her!

When I was younger I'd want the tunes and often did the car doors/windows open thing.

Nowadays I'd rather listen to the calls of the wild from Nature. There are some birds and animals you'd likely never know for sure are out there unless you hear them ( and some of them don't call much) because you even more likely will never see them.

If I want music I sing. Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a radio or my ipod, but that is one more gadget to mess around with, and the fewer gadgets I have to fool with, the happier I am. That is definitely one of the advantages to hand splitting - all I need is a maul with zero moving parts.

Pandora or Slacker Country hits on the phone. Anyone have any good recommendations on ear buds that will allow you to move and not fall out?

I can stack a 4x8 rack before Inna Godda Devita is over!

LG makes a good set. My buddy has a set for his phone. Tried them on (after cleaning of course) Not only do they fit in your ear great. They sound fantastic. Going to get a "Bundle Package" for my Droid Bionic that includes the LG ear buds, hard case w/ holster and clip, and the extended life battery and back cover.

The ear buds have a nice design. They can only go in one way, because of how its molded. My son has some nice ones for his Ipod. But dont sound as good ss these. IMO

Eyehategod, Electric Wizard, The Melvins, The Sword, Down, High on Fire, Sleep

I like the way the SkullCandy ear buds fit, and how they block noise, but not how they hold up.
The wire is always getting disconnected from the plug; tried fixing once, but man, those wires are small.
I'd like to find a more rugged design.

Check out the vModa line up. Mine survive almost daily use and getting yanked around from me crawling on/off machinery.

Normally electronic ambient "Space" (Eno, etc) music which does blend in and not intrude on the "world music" around me. For a change cue up one of the electric blues guitar gods at 11 and listen to crank the energy when wood is busting my cojones (esp. the two "Live Cream" LPs). Clapton, Bruce and Baker=transcendence. Oh, also Mahavishnu Orchestra when I need to seriously center myself to the task at hand.

I generally just like to enjoy what silence I can get. However I have been blessed on occasion to the serenade of one of my daughters practicing their violin as I split. That has been enjoyable :)
