Plate Block - Arg!!!!

Guys if you are going to use Roxul, which I have used a lot of in chimneys, please wear a good mask. That stuff is very short fiber and your lungs will thank you. And if you do it like mhrischuk at the very least put aluminum foil under it. It is gonna shed fiber for the rest of its life.
 
Rock wool is made by heating up rock and then blowing it out like cotton candy. What comes out is rock fiber, a good fire resistant insulator. Temperatures would have to get up near 2000 degrees to melt.

As to finding a plate. The piece of sheet metal is nine bucks in the duct work section of Lowe's and a pair of tin snips is around ten. Complete instructions here:
