I couldn't get the wife to budge on the stove-on-hearth concept.
She likes the look of the Kozy Heat Z-42 and so do I.
Seems like positive views from the 192 posts containing the words "Kozy Heat" in the Hearth Room.
Measured the existing opening this morning: 42" Wide by 38" High: exactly the opening for the Kozy Heat-that has to be a good sign.
I'm going to see if I can get any specs on the existing Heatilator to see how the rest of the dimensions line up.
At least one post I read seemed to indicate that the Z42 was designed with contractor z.c. replacement in mind.

This project will be after the current burning season, but it will make for a winter of new-stove-dreamin'.

I read a lot on the Kozy Heat fireplaces, and everything I read was pretty good...we went with a Napoleon NZ3000, mainly for the fact that I already have a Napoleon 1900P in the kitchen, and we love that stove!...I am installing my 3000 right now, getting finished on the hearth this morning should be putting the fireplace in the chase tomorrow evening, Monday at the latest.....keep us posted on yer project!

Good luck!

Start getting your wood now

Thanks. Would'nt ya know, on the way out of town today, we stopped by and looked at a NorthStar. The store owner was the one who sold the Heatilator to the original owner of the house and he had the specs on record! The chimney would work with the NorthStar and it could save 1500 plus. The unit is well built, but I don't know about the arch-you almost have to put in stone around it. I'll have to look at the Kozy Heat in person next week.

velvetfoot, We're in our 3rd night fire with our z42. Not much experience here with burning wood in the house (i.e., can't compare it to any other efficient model) but this thing rocks. We had a 44"W x 37 1/4"H hole to fit... the height got us in trouble so I just got out the angle grinder & respirator and cut some concrete to lower the platform by 1" so the unit could slide in. We still need to trim it out with a surround of some sort.

One thing you might check... the place where we bought our z42 included 20' of pipe (6" class A). So if you're still in the hunt, check if that's a bonus with KozyHeat. It could have been our dealer, but I'm pretty sure our dealer said the pipe came with the stove as standard package.

Good luck! --Bri

I think you will enjoy the Kozy. I am two years of use into mine and I have had the gas company calling and asking if I am having problems with my gas service! They have changed the gas meter each year so far!
