anybody ever burn this eastern red bud for firewood?....im gonna get my hands on some in the next week or so..beleive it or not they are pretty good sized..about 12 inches around at base

Never heard of it.
post some pictures when you get some.
It's all BTUs

The stuff grows like weeds around my place. Also our state tree.
It is a light weight of a hardwood but when seasoned will burn relatively fast.

I burn it on a rare occasion. It is definitely a keeper as it splits easily, seasons in less than a year and would rate it equivalent to white ash on the btu scale.

That's relatively huge as far as an understory tree grows. I've never seen one that big. They are a neat legume.

I can't help you on the burning of it though.

Back where I'm from in Virginia, the red buds would signal the arrival of spring and fishing. Beautiful trees that bloom along country roads. Never seen any get much bigger than 4-5 inches at the trunk.

I'd never cut one down, but if it's down already, I'd burn it.

I have several that size in my neck of the woods.

They break limbs easily probably why you don't see bigger ones.

Insects get to them easily, they get die back due to fungus also.

for the most part they are sickly trees.

I've been cutting some that are damaged or dying, but none that big. It feels pretty hefty, even the drier dead stuff. Haven't burned any yet...

I just cut up a Red bud at my Dads that came down in the snow storm. I'd say it was about 10-12" at the base and was planted about 20-25 years ago.

I've burned some. Don't recall how well it burns. Somewhere between aspen and osage. I don't remember hating it, or being wowed by it. Burn it...it is all btus.

I snagged two seedlings when I was living in Indiana and brought them to my Dad's in MA - they did well and are the only two redbuds I know of in the area. Won't be burning them until they die! Cheers!

Thanks guys..ill get this wood..and keep my eyes open for more big ones
