Just curious if anyone does this with their pellet stove. I have my stove in the basement and right above stove is a steel grate to allow air to rise up into the dining room. I was thinking of taking some sort of duct work and attaching it to half of opening of stove and run the duct straight up to grate to allow hot air to get upstairs alot more efficiently. Ideally, half the hot air would be redirected upstairs and the other half would blow into the basement. Anyone?

I'm cutting a hole thru my living room wall where my pellet stove is into my bathroom as my 1st floor plan is U-shaped . My living room gets pretty warm & i'm sure there will be more than enought hot air being blown across the room to allow warm air to go thru to the bathroom. The pellet stove handles the rest of the house no prob but the little woman wants a bit more warmth in the bathroom. Depending on the height & size of your stove, hot air rises so.... good luck. I'm sure you'll get some results

Thanks. Just did a trial run with flexible aluminum ducting and its great how much hot air is getting upstairs. Doesn't even compare to how it was before without the ducting. The stove I have virtually heats up nothing upstairs due to my configuration. I have to have it extremely hot in the rec room where the stove is to make a very minimal difference upstairs which makes in unbearable to spend any amt. of time in the rec room. So far, the stove has been on for couple hours and heat is staying steady downstairs at around 73 degree's. Just curious if there is any safety concerns doing this? The duct gets pretty hot. I have a total of maybe 4 1/2 feet of this duct running up to dining room...

Broan through the wall fans for our 3 bedrooms. Work great. Used to use corner mount fans but they are just as noisy and only put out a 1/4 of the air.

Just for room to room comfort. Wont help for a basement install. There are a couple people here that have made duct systems from the basement though.

This is the first pics ive posted of this. Did not want the code patrol to go nuts. Heating the upstairs from a basement is very difficult.

There are three ducts each with its own centrifugal inline fan, blowing 425 cfm. This in return is connected to a duct stat and a fan speed control. Which ties into the floor registers .

The basement and all upstairs stays whatever i set the stat to. All fans kick on and off automatically.Works great for my needs. Up to code. Doubt it. Got the idea from don222. Just made it fit my situation. Im far from the first to do this and sure not the last.

Actually ive now disconnected the duct work from the front of the stove and just let the fans pull the warm air from the basement. Works great and looks better.

On a side note. That thing looks crazy. Thinking mechanical spider on ceiling.

On a serious note, Dempsey has been here long enough and read enough to understand the rights and wrongs. Is the wrong?? No. Is it right?? No.

But does it work??? If it works and he feels he has taken every possible step to ensure its a safe system. Then by all means, the new named "Code Police" will step down.

Making sure the Newb's that come in the door dont do something like that , without taking into account, every single thing that must be done, to do it safely.

I didnt want to install my Fahrenheits Duct because I read in the manual, that the duct had to be rated for 250*. My heart dropped. I thought I was gonna have to have a Pro do it. Well I called the place that made my system and they told me that Certainteed Ultraduct Gold is in fact rated for 250*.

Thank God. I didnt know any better, I must have skipped that temp in the manual. But seeing it last week, made me think I was gonna have to have a seperate duct system made for it.

Not knockin Dempsey. Never knocked on Jay or Don. If the system works. And you know you have taken all possible steps? And if you were in the mood, "possibly" show the local Fire Chief or inspector, just to have peace of mind.

People are gonna do what they do. Making sure they know the safest way to do the job, is something that just naturally comes from this site. Whether I call them out, or another member (there are quite a few). Just want them to know the facts. Made me feel good when Smoke called me out.

If you do know the question, you'll never find the answer. Alright. Im done. Good job jdempsey. You learned how hard it is to heat from the basement. Going forward, you know you need a Stove upstairs, or better yet, a Furnace of some sort (Sorry BTW). Lessons in life. We all learn them.

This is what I rigged up to see if it would work. Duct goes upstairs to dining room grate. Put a fan up there to blow hot air around. Working good. Any thoughts? It's simple but effective. Half the air upstairs, other half downstairs!

Take a joke buddy. ;-)

I know your just jibbin.... But, its the truth. If people dont know any better, than they should at least be told what may be and may not be right. I am not obligated to tell them, I just feel that its better they know... Than to not know.

I always get your humor.......... ;-P. I actually thought about changing my user name to "Code Cop". Just as a joke for a day or two.. But that wouldnt be funny joke.

Love busting your b@lls, but greatly appreciate the insightfulness and constant vigil. Keep at it "CodeCop", because most, if not all of us, are listening.

Now when you get tired of that pellet furnace give me a loud shout. Im just over the border.

Keep you updated on the status.

Hey you 2 timer, I though we might have a trade? ;-) JK hehe!

I don't think dex could trade, He'll just keep adding then to his collection!

On a serious note. I have heard there are floor grates that have heat safeties(fire stops) in them. Just haven't found them. This would solve some issues with the vent/duct adders out there! Any one seen any?

Im wondering if running the air handlers for my heating system will really take in the warm air rising to my second floor hallway and effectively distribute the warm air to the rooms on the second floor? I had the fan running for awhile and didnt notice a change in temperature in my bedroom. Suggestions?

You'd have to discribe the conditions. How close is the stove to the intake of the air handler? Your probably going to have to really raise the heat in that area. And it will probably take awhile for the ducts heat loss to settle out(your warming the ducting volume up first) to see any heating gain upstairs.

Moving heated air is always easier when the air mover(fan) is behind the convection area.

The stove is on the first floor. The intake is on the second floor. The hallway that the intake is in (in the ceiling) does feel warm. I guess its not warm enough to raise the temperature in the rooms. Like you said the air has to warm the ducts which run through the attic. Maybe one of those through the wall fans would work better..pulling hot air into the bedroom?
