Is this for real. They say my stove has an 18 hour burn. I all ways thought that was any hot coals left in the box. at max with no cat I can get 4 hours before I reload.

I didn't pull any BS, this it just an honest "how I do it" & no stretching or bending facts.

Good dry birch, as much as I can get in there. Get the stove & cat hot, turn it down & let it burn.
I'll go down this evening & mix & rake the coals to the front & let it burn a few hours so there's room for another full load & do it again tonight.
Now it's not getting cold when I get the 24 hour burns, it was 30° last nigh & 32° today.
When it's cold (single digits & colder) I get 14 to 16 hour burns & have to put a 1/3 to 1/2 load in, in the afternoon to get to 10 PM at night then a full load.

No problem. Thats where I am posting from.

Edit: It looks like Pook and BK are getting ready for a ping-pong match, gotta go.

Ping-pong? Heck, with you, me, BogyDave and Pook, all we need is one more and we can form a basketball team like in "One Flew Over the Cuckoos's Nest". I kinda look like Danny DeVito in real life, but I call dibs on the Jack Nicholson part anyway. After all, I'm the only one here faking my insanity. ;-P

I like the sound of BK stoves.

Then I would have to vote in Delta-T for the fifth position, but I can't vouch for his court skillz. I hear he does play a mean game of ping-pong, however.

Is that a 24 hour burn from birch?

That rather blows away anyone who moans about birch over here ;-)

Yes, a full load of Alaskan birch.
Our birch here, when tested has 23,600,000 BTU/cord.
It rates up into the "good" fire wood on most charts.
Various birch species & even locations vary the BTU, growth & density etc.
I think the Alaska Forestry Department measured it back in 1996. Alaska wood BTU chart:

Till you see the price tag. Everything comes at a price. Waiting till Fireside looses the distributor contract for the east then I will buy one.
Its all ways the price that get you. I have not see the price the closest place I have is Rutherford NC.

Our silver birch here rates at about 20,000,000BTU per cord, I like it to burn, but most people here avoid it as it burns too quickly.
I burn a lot as it's so easily available free.
Might have to load up sometime to see the longest burn I can get, 6 hours here on my stove would be pretty good... :)

When I got mine there were some good federal & state tax credit & rebates.
Any $$ savings helps + I save 40% (+/-) on the amount of wood I burn per year. (every year now)
Old (non cat) stove 9 to 10 cords; Last years full season of burning, 5-1/2 cords. (Oct thru Apr, 24/7)
Burn roughly 20% spruce & 80% birch.

Come on Dave. Weigh your next load - pretty please. I want to do a real life 'cyfer'in of the btu in compared to the btu out. I know, I know, sounds geeky.

My wife already thinks I'm nuts, with all the wood processing, wood shed, new stove pipe,
Scrounging wood from neighbors, right of ways & road sides.
When I steal the bathroom scales to weight how much fire wood I load into the stove;
she won't have any doubts & will be calling the looney squad. :lol LOL.
I'd like to know myself, so I'll try to get a weight as close as I can.
Your gonna have to visit me in the Looney farm :)

Dave, perhaps our wives are related? However, I rarely surprise her any more. She usually just takes it in stride but still loves to tell some others how "bad" I am....

Good for you with your wood and stove. You have really shown what folks can do when they make up their minds to get serious with wood burning. You are a great member of hearth.com.

Hey Mellow aren't there some dealers in deleware? One just became a BK dealer across the bay in Waldorf. You're right, the prices aint pretty. i saw a princess today for # $3200.00. From what i can tell, thats the only drawback to them. The initial investment is a little hard to swallow.
dealers: https://www.blazeking.com/EN/wood-princess.html

Aye, the cover charge ain't cheap. And for some of us in the east, there aren't even any official BK dealers around (the BK east coast distributor ended up directing me to a local dealer who was "somewhat familiar with the BK line" and could order the stoves, but weren't an actual BK dealer).

No matter. Between the long burns - no longer staying up late and getting up early trying to keep the fire going - and the amazing efficiency of the stoves - I reckon I'm burning half the wood I did in my old stove - my Princess is the best purchase I've made in a long time.

Thanks for the thread, Dave. Very impressive!

Now that you bring it up, My Wife had the day off and said " Do you want to go to town with me are you going to Play with your wood"

Thanks Dennis
She was just laughing at me & my neighbor plowing snow. (Bobcat & an ATV with a plow going all directions) We got the road (that is supposed to be plowed by the borough), the mail boxes & our drive ways. & having fun doing it. I think she still likes me, moose stew with dumplings tonight :)
We have one of the new digital scales with buttons to push to make it work, so she'll have to help weigh the wood, That story will probably be told many times, verifying how nuts I am. "He weighs the firewood & takes pictures of it" (does sound a little nuts now that I think about it)

The Catalytic stoves are impressive.
& since I learned here how to season wood properly, I get even more efficiency out of it. There's seasoned wood & there's dry wood. I got dry wood now :)
Thanks to you & others on the forum.

Man, every time I read posts like this about the BK's, I can't help but think I'm crazy for not having bought one - I just have to believe that you BK owners are all paid by the company to make up such fables of wood burning nirvana! Cheers!

20 hours later,
I'm mixing the coals & big chunks (chunks kinda like charcoal, black & light weight , brittle & break up) Do it fast & let it burn a minute or 2 with the door cracked then I can go back in & see.
Glass sooted up on these low burns. It will burn allot of it off with this 4 hour hotter burn & be cleaner tonight.
I catches fir pretty quick, I leave the door cracked a minute to get the flue hot so I can go in & poke around some more & not get smoke out the door.
I set to a high setting, close the door & get the cat hot again.
Then set to a medium setting & will let it burn another 4 or 5 hours & then time for a reload.
Pic, door open,: chunks & coals left & mixed & pulled to middle & front
Pic door cracked to heat the flue so I can go poke some more with out getting smoke. can see the blackened glass from low burn.

I found mine on craigslist brand new for a used stove price. I didn't need a new stove(Endeavor was 2 years old) I bought it just to see what all the hype was about. I can say they deliver as advertised! If Dave was heating from the main level his times would be even more impressive. I'm still able to pull off a 24 hour burn +- a little when it says in the 30's with the little princess.

I just wanted to chime in with thumbs up for everything Dave said, especially the part about burning less wood than with the old stove. I never added up my total cords for last winter, my first with the BK, but I did remember that with my old non-cat stove my indoors load of wood would last 5 - 7 days (depending on outside temps) until I needed to bring some more in. With the BK it is 8 - 10 days. I also appreciate the long burns - I never get up early to re-load even at -40º. But the thing that I appreciate most is the steady room temp in the house all day and night long, regardless of where the stove is in the burn cycle. The only adjustment I need to make is a little bump in the thermostat one way or the other if there is a big change in outdoor temps during a burn.

^^^This right here is one of the really cool parts of these stove. I have it 71 in here right now and when I wake up tomorrow it'll be 70-71. 2 hours into a burn with the old stove I'd be laying on the floor trying to escape the heat. As I've said many times before, the control you get with these stoves is nothing short of amazing.

I was one of the 1st ones to post about having a newer BK on this site a few years ago. All I got was I was full of BS at the time.
Left the site a few times and mumbled IGNORANT so and so,s after a few comment's made to me. I was doubted in every way. Thanks again for posting Dave and the rest also for sharing. Nice to have a few on my side. Glad I stuck around to see this.
Cheers

N60: I know you were & are right.
I had a 28 yr old BK. Upgraded to a new catalytic BK because I was happy with the performance of the old one.
Got some tax credits & rebates.
I don't have any experience with other stoves. (other than as a kid in WV burning coal & in PA a coal/wood stove, but I just shoveled coal & cut wood)
I figured the new cat stoves were more efficient & all had long burn times as "the norm".
I learned from N60, BWS, BB, the BKs, Hiram & others here how to operate it (+the wood stove store owner). ;)
Made improvements to my system & wood as I learned.
Just showing what I've learned here has paid off & giving/showing a honest "how I load & burn" with pictures.
Now I'm weighing the next load of wood. No doubt, I'll learn more from that.
This site has been great help & still is.

I am just drooling. What is a good average price for one of these BK ultra's. I have an old stove non cat and am lucky to get 5 hours on it. I just can't imagine. So what do these go for usually.
