B/L OR Honey locust need to see a split

That's weird UncontrollableE, I just asked a friend what kind of fallen storm wood he had given us, because I knew it was Oak but didn't look anything like the other oak we had, and he told me it was "Chestnut Oak." I came here and did a search to see if anyone had any to show, or to say about it, and there was nothing on here, and then you put that there!
Backwoods, our pcs of "Chestnut oak" look like that, (but ours doesn't have such nice thick bark on it - maybe it's just from a different part of the tree?)

This is the tree itself, no branches. Keep the id's comin' :)

Black locust. Those furrows and bark thickness says no oak to me. Considering I just cut some black locust today and it looks exactly like that. Plus the growth rings are a little fast for oak to me on your pics. Honey is a semi smoother bark than black. See if you can press in the bark with your fingers and take some off.... Ever try that w oak? Only asking from pickin up rounds with bare hands oak... Oak is a real hard bark!

If it is an Oak you should be able to see the radial rays in the split. I see no rays, therefore Black Locust.

I think you mean medullary rays!
I'll bet my forestry degree it's Chestnut Oak !

I'll put 30 years of sawmill expirience up against that forestry degree! Black Locust. There are no medullary rays in either the split or in evidence on the blocks. In the harwood lumber biz, they have always been refered to as radial rays because most of us couldn't spell medullary! LOL

+1. Not seeing enough orange on the surface of that bark, either.

Not BL. Wood is too red. BL looks is green like pressure treated lumber when it is fresh cut.

I cut alot of b/l the bark resembles it but the split is off, and backwoods probably knows answer I can bring some home and my wife will I/D it pictures are sometimes deceiving. I cut dead standing fell over whatever there is a tree that has bark like B/L but is trash wood cuts like butter you can definitely tell when you run a saw through it. I leave it I will post some pictures on another thread.

To me the bark does look like B/L but the split does not, I do know this I cut into a piece I know immediately

My Botany degree says Lee is probably right! ;-P

It wasn't the easiest to cut through. Definitely not butter. More like a spiral ham. Split easier though.
