So, thinking ahead to summer projects, I'm thinking about ways to improve our burning. We have an Oslo installed in front of an open brick fireplace. We do not meet clearance specs for the mantle- well, we do for the horizontal part, but there is some more mantle (round scrolls) that jut out underneath that are getting too hot. Right now, we have tacked up some aluminum foil to sort of shield the largest scroll. Here's how it looks without the aluminum:
We could bring the stove forward, but we were thinking to put on a rear heat shield, and then maybe attaching a mantle shield directly to that, because there isn't an obvious place to attach a horizontally oriented mantle shield. We would also like to preserve the ability to cook on the top of the stove, so the mantle shield would have to allow plenty of space above the top surface.
Is it ok to attach a metal mantle shield to a rear heat shield? Also, does a mantle shield have to be much wider than the stove, to prevent heat from billowing around and over, from either side of the shield? Thanks for any comments!
