We have a stone fireplace we would like to convert to a gas fireplace, preferably something modern with simple clean lines, preferably without any cladding or trim, just a plain glass front. We plan to cover the stonework anyway. The goal is mainly decorative, so we don't need massive BTUs. Visits to two fireplace retailers have so far failed to answer how to achieve that. We've been told you need an insert, and then shown models with lots of metal trim and wire screens in front of the glass. Any advice on how to achieve a simple look? Could we just install a prefab contemporary fireplace that is not an insert? Is there some reason we can't have plain glass? Thanks a ton for any advice.
