Beetle ID

For those amateur entomologists out there(or profesional ones!), I found this beetle in my stacks when I was putting them the woodshed for the winter. I've spent a couple of hours on the interwebs and can't seem to find anything. It's about 15mm long with fairly large mandible. Location is Southern Vancouver Island.

I find a lot of them in my swimming pool here in New Jersey

Mmmm...apparently scarities are all black.

Im thinking the colorization on the picture is from The Flash

I’m afraid to touch them. Lol. I just scoop them out of the pool with a net and toss them

No flash, it was green.
