Driving buy one of the largest firewood processor/retailers last week and noticed something. The size of the wood splits they are selling differ big time from what I have in the pile. Not length, but girth. Example; they are selling splits that measure 10 inches in total length of sides. Many splits in my pile are over ten inches on one leg of the triangle. Surely it looks like more wood when it is delivered, so good for business, but is that the "norm" for wood splits?

I usually use splits any ware from 4in to 10in that is what
Works best fore me

I think a lot more people complain about split too big than split too small. They split to make their market happy. Personally, I like 8x8s.

If I had to buy split wood, I'd hope for larger than smaller splits. You can always make a split smaller, but pretty tough to make a split bigger. Cheers!

It varies, sometimes I use pretty big stuff, sometimes pretty medium stuff (easily hold it by the end with one hand), most often I have a mix in the pile.

I'd say if you are going to be marginal on seasoning times, then split it smaller. If it is going to be split and stacked in a good area for a year and a 1/2 or more, then leave them big and you could always split them in 1/2 later of if that fits your desire at that time.

Here is a thread on "loading the nc-30" that shows some of the wood people are shoving in these things.
