In The Woods
On the way up Mt. Arab to look at the fall colors we came across this birch tree, it's the biggest I have ever seen. (I'm sure there is bigger)

Cool Zap

I cut down a standing dead one earlier this year 32" dbh that the bark looked like that one. When it came down it was solid so I bucked it up and its split on the wood pile now. The only reason I cut it down was to use the stump to put minerals on it for the deer.

nice birch - do you know what species it is?

we have massive yellow birch up in the mountains around here and in WV.

the black birch around here don't seem to get quite as big though.

farther south of here, there are river birch which get to be huge trees that grow along the bigger rivers next to sycamores.

Flint I don't, maybe some off the vets on the site can tell us. I'll take a guess and say Curly Birch.

i would guess that it has to be either yellow birch or white (paper) birch. but we don't have paper birch around here, so I don't know that one as well.

I'm not familiar with curly birch - is that another name for paper birch?

Looks like either a yellow birch or gray birch to me . . .kind of hard to tell the coloring in the first pic.

I think it looks like ash to me. :)
