Block Off Plate Advice (Pics)

The top of my firebox is steel (or metal) lined leading up to my damper. As you can see the dimensions aren't square or rectangle, making the creation of a block off plate a bit more challenging. Any advice on measuring and cutting?

The second pic is with the damper open showing the flue. Although the pictures don't show it because of the angle they were taken, it's pretty much a straight shot.

Template it with cardboard first. Then use that as a guide for cutting the sheetmetal.
 
I'd skip the metal block off and just stuff it with KOA Wool or rock wool insulation.
