In "The Gear" forum I read about taking down the rakers on store-bought chain for better results...it cut through that soft maple like melted butter at like 2x speed...chips flew off like noodles...I'll see how it does on the locust tomorrow...one action shot of a round tumbling downhill...that bad boy was checking me out...

That boy wouldn't be hanging around long up here. Somebody is bound to take a shot at him.

Could be a rough ride! Big difference going from buttery silver maple to rocky road locust!

I use silver maple when I want to show off my saw. ==c:p

Dammit, I hope I see something like that in the woods come Monday morning! Those rakers make all the difference, don't they? Just be sure to NOT take too much off of them, that can make the chain outright dangerous and a pain in the azz to cut with.....

Albert, do you use some sort of gadget to regulate how much the rakers are adjusted down? It sure does seem to help cutting, I use a cheapo depth guage and flat file which makes the rakers .025" below the cutter edges.

Every 3-4 sharpenings I give the rakers 3 light strokes with a small flat file.Sure makes a difference when cutting dense Honey Locust & other woods.Same treatment is very aggresive with softer woods,chips/shavings flying 10+ ft over my shoulder!

Yeah I put the gauge on it and it was right at .025...it's an old chain, it cut so much better I thought they may have been lower, I eyballed it pretty good... kicked but on the silver maple, cut the locust today and did great (I can't believe it's not butter)...that's a good idea, I will lower every few sharpenings or so...I'll just take this old chain and lower it a tad more for soft woods...I'm learning...thanks everyone...
