A do-it yourself model would probably not be very efficient nor long lived. i would recommend using a wood-burning boiler with a cupro-nickel heat exchanger. Do not run the pool water through the boiler directly ! HS TARM (http://www.woodboilers.com) makes some great boilers. For a lower cost option (but not as good)- look at the outdoor "water stoves" that are being sold by certain dealers.
