I stumbled upon this rather interesting article about coal on the "geology.com" website.
I was surprised to learn that there is a lot of minute wood particles still in a lot of coal. Anyhow, the article is called,

I live right up the road from the Hitzer stove shop. I have checked out their stoves and think they make a nice product. If I wasn't sitting on all the wood I need, one of these would be on the top of my list.

Yeah, an interesting read...

In my (accustomed) ignorance, I would have thought coal was homogenous (?) right through.
