I have a majestic MHC42 pre-fab fireplace. It was in the house we moved into. It has no fire panels. It looks like it has been used before by the previous owners. We heard that it might not need fire panels because it is an older fireplace....1984?

By fire panels do you mean the internal fire brick panels? If so the manual calls for side and back fire brick panels. See the parts diagram here:
