Question:

We have converted our conventional wood fireplace to gas by installing a gas log kit. We truly enjoy it. Now we are adding a new room and wish to have the same effect, however, every prefab we look at has a full glass door. Is there a product available in pre-fab that will allow us to burn gas logs without having to have a glass closed fireplace?

Answer:

All direct vent gas fireplaces and most b-vent gas fireplaces use sealed doors...The only option if you want an open fire is to install a wood burning fireplace (pre-fab or masonry) and then install gas logs into it. This chimney needs to extend all the way up..not just directly outside like a direct-vent. Vent-Free appliances are also open fires, but the flames are usually not as pretty.
