I can see the concern, the manual is pretty crappy in this important area.

Direct connect is listed as a possibility, but it's not not the preferred method of installation. A full liner is much better.

provided your flue meets the size requirements and is in good shape you can use the direct connect. Both for performance and maintenance reasons it is not the preferred method.
