Evil perlite, smoke filled room, what happened?

Much better for the chimney venting but I still think a square cap would do you better to keep water out from coming in the tile square IMHO. Did that fix your smoke problem...?
 
Why not just use some tin and make a piece that fits over the red part to keep the water out. It would be pretty cheap and you could retain your current chimney cap.
