Fan Belt Lengths

    I'm fitting a different (bigger) motor to an old garden tractor I use to get back and forth to the woods.
    I'm wondering if I should have my new belts (longer) first, before making an adapter plate to mount the motor which can be made for the right height or what is the best and easiest way to approach this.
    And, what is the best way to measure around pulleys for new belts and how much should be added for idlers?
