Out at garage sales today and I found several things as the first picture shows.

What I need help with are the two brass movements that support and revolve a cooking pot hung in old hearths. There is no name I can find. Both work with a windup key. One is taken apart to show the workings.

Apparently, you hang it on your hearth rods with the large end down. When a pot is hung on the bottom hook, the weight releases the movement, and the pot begins to turn several degrees at a time until it makes a full turn. Then the wind up movement clicks and it slowly begins to turn the kettle back the other way.

What do you call them? What do you think the age and worth of each one would be?

Thanks for your help,

Bill

I'm thinking that's a clock jack, google it and you'll find more info and can compare them with what you have, but if that's it, you LUCKY DOG! I'm beyond envious! That's the find of the century (18th, that is ;) )

That is almost the holy grail of finds.

I always wanted one for my cooking pot when I had the open fire.

I'm seriously jealous, and extremely pleased for you.

Last time I saw one for sale it was over £1000.

They call them a tourne brouche in France, but thats the French for you ;-)

Thanks HollowHill for the name, and to you both for your perspectives. I wasn't getting anywhere with my searches, and I didn't know where to start because I didn't know what they were called.

Any more information or pictures you find would be apreciated ..... If our economy doesn't turn around, we may be using these again...

Many thanks,
Bill

OK, I did a little nosing around and it looks like it's called a bottle jack. And, I was off a century (19th) :red: Still an awesome, awesome find. Here's a pic:
