Took me and another guy 4.5 hours to drop this last night and we made the final felling cut with a Halogen floodlight so we could see. I'm annoyed now that the weather doesn't look like its going to cooperate tomorrow and I probably wont be able to get it bucked and split. Think I'll get a cord out of this thing?

I should have added the reason it took 4.5 hours last night is because this tree was about 8 foot off of our house and we had to rope the whole top down out of it. What a pain in the butt!

Precisely. Use whatever tools & equipment you have to make the job easier & safer.I'd kill for a small Cat or even a mid -sized skidsteer with rubber tracks.Seen one at State Fair exhibit last summer from local dealer,3 yrs old with low hours only $32K. Might as well been $250K lol

Good planning, Good job, smart job, happy ending is a good ending.
Good wood in 2 years too.

certified, it sounds like you guys did a great job. I've taken some of those down and it is not easy work to be sure. But now you also have some great firewood.

I get tons of Red but very seldom a White. Those things live forever. I'm guessing you took it down because it was threatening the house?
If it isn't a cord, it'll match the BTUs of a cord of almost anything else. :)

It was about 8' from my house and about 10 foot from my garage and driveway. I had a branch come out and hit the house this winter and just thought it was tiem to come down. Some of the branches were hanging at least 8 foot over the roof and i really didn't want to have foundation, or driveway issues from the root system. It was sad to see it come down for sure but I have so many trees 15 foot from my house that it won't hardly effect the shade during the summertime. After all the Hickory I have cut lately this white oak cut like butter.

Got the branches cleaned up and some of the smaller stuff bucked before the rain set in this evening. The base where we cut it was 28" in diameter and the length from where I cut it to the point at which the wood was to small for firewood was about 56 feet.

must of felt good when it came down it didnt hit the house. lol

Is the stuff in the background to the left of the gas can part of that tree as well? If so, I think that must be a cord+ (just guessing.)
I think I see where that other limb broke off last winter...

We've got a Shingle Oak that's about 20' from the back of the house. It forked into two sections about 18' up. I hated to have one side of the vee taken off, but that thing was hanging over all the way to the roof ridge. I didn't lose much shade; The remaining vee section got taller, with all that weight off the trunk. I'm still using that section to hang my CB antenna, and the cut-off gave me good heat six months after it was cut.
The tree is gorgeous with its dark green, shiny leaves and interesting bark pattern. Not as gorgeous now, but I could hug it and I wouldn't care who saw me. :lol:

I just got the OK to take a dead standing Shagbark from a neighbor's property. Sounds like my saw and chain have got their work cut out for them.

"Think I’ll get a cord out of this thing?"
Almost. Hmm,.. diameter 28", ... pi(r-squared),, .. 615.7 square inches times (56 ft. times 12)
gives... Hmmmm, ... 413,750 cubic inches (but figure half of total volume). Hmmm,...
206,785 cu.inch .. NOPE. Not a cord.
You got 206,785/221,184 = 0.9349 of a cord ..
This is like one of those word problems in school so long ago. ALMOST a cord and that's, like,
the best firewood around.

Revised :
If you C/S/S it a little loose, it will be WAY over a cord. Great score.

OK,
14x14x3.14=615 sq.in.
Divided by 144=4.27 sq.ft.
Let's go with 30' long, as one branch was taken earlier and the remaining trunk is smaller than the base.

4.27x30=128 cu.ft :lol:

Hahaha, You guys are killing me withyour calculations. :) I will say this after getting started on it last night I'm pretty sure it will be a little over a cord of wood and my stacking isn't loose. Now I will have my four cords bucked for this year and have about 2 of them left to split. Anything else I find will just be a bonus. you never know I might need the extra wood with my new inefficient non cat stove lol. :lol:

Forget about the calculations...just burn the damn stuff. ;-) You'll be immensely happy with the incredible heat from that White Oak.

Nice job. I did one like that last year, just off my deck. Put a come-along on it and my goal was to just miss my daughters play house. She is 27 now so it is not a big deal. It came down right were I wanted, a good feeling. I have 3 more too close to the house but after taking out 5 oaks and a big cherry this winter, to make room for a pole barn, I can not push any more, my wife is getting upset. It is nice to see some more daylight though, the canopy was taking over. I am planning on using my Alaskan Mill on the trunk sections and burning the branches.

Thistle, lower your bar a little and you can find something. I got my 2004 Bobcat T190 track machine for $13000. I am sure I have already improved my land by that amount leveling spots and putting in trails. It is also sweet for tree harvesting, moving logs, etc.

That's exactly what I need - bucket,grapple dont think I'd have a use for the auger or other attachments though.Now just have to find a way to pay for it lol.

I just got in from finishing the bucking. Wow it has been one of those days with 40+mph hour winds and it just seemed like everything went wrong. The wind was so bad I waited most of the day to buck but finally just gave up and started bucking and now I will be digging sawdust out of my eyes and ears for about a week. Within the first five cuts the tree must have had some tension and it rotated and pinched the saw. I ended up having to get the tractor and loader to unpinch the bar which ended up being about a 45 minute endevour. Now I'm just glad it's over and hopefully I can get it split this week.

Wow 10 days later I finally was able to get some split tonight but it started pouring on me at the end so I gave up. Maybe I'll get it split so i can mow one of these years :lol:
this had to be some of the worst splitting stuff I have split in a long time. The whole tree was two trees growing together so there is little to no straight grain in this mess. I am really glad I got it down though as some of the center was a little bit punky due to the way it was growing so at least I don't have to worry about it coming down on my house any more.
