When the afterburn system is engaged in my TL 300 thre is no real active flames throughout the firebox. Most of the fire is in the combustion chamber. Inside the firebox it is clear with some seconday action ocurring periodically.

Is this what it should look like?

thats what it should do when shut down... the main fire will smolder, while the secondary chamber burns up all the unburnt gasses (smoke).... if you turn up the air intake, however, you should get some flame from the main body of the fire.
