My fireplace is almost done - now ready for the hearth stone. The fireplace surround was built out with plywood and passed code. My questions is can I mortar the hearth stone upon the plywood hearth which is 18" high off the floor, or do I need t put backerboard dowe first upon the plywood?

The stone should go on cement backer board. But more importantly, what kind of stove is this? Gas? If not, what make/modle?
