How to Cut off LARGE Burl from tree base?

    My uncle has a tree on his property that has a Dbl. watermelon size burl near the base, the burl takes up approx. 35% of the tree's circumference (the tree is a Maple about 2.4 feet thick at base), Is their any technics or methods to get this burl without killing the tree?
