I've been working on building a masonry cookstove. The prototype is built outside on my porch while I work out the kinks. I've noticed a marked decrease in draft versus my inside cookstove despite the fact that the outside stack is taller and has fewer elbows. This observation is based on stuffing burning paper in stove pipe at the stove. Why is it so much worse?

If the inside of your house is at a higher temperature than the outside at the chimney top, that by itself will create draft.
