I have a 2005 Qaudrafire 5100i
how do I know what insulation to put in on top of the bricks when replacing it?
I thought it was one inch, and I put that in, now, I am not so sure, seems like smoke cannot get out? It isn't building up in fire box, but seems like no matter how much air can get in, wood(which is really, really dry) will not burn, and I get smoke out of chimney, which I never get?
is insulation too thick?
Just been cleaned, and is a s spotless as I can get it.

2 stoves here- Englander insulation boards are a little less than 1/2", other older stove was 1/2" also. With that in mind it sounds as if the board you used is too thick.
There is a baffle in the top of the Englander that if you were to put something thicker in it would restrict the exhaust flow - sounds like that is what your problem is.

A quick look at Quadrafire's website finds an owners manual and a peek inside that gives us 832-3390 as a part number for the blanket. Amazon has them for sale for $45. A little pricey if you ask me.
When putting the blanket in be sure to get it all the way to the back of the stove and be sure it doesn't bunch up.

1/2" is typical. One thing to check after installing. Make sure the insulation blanket is not pushed too far back and bunching up at the back of the baffle, under the flue exit. If it bunches up there it will block the smoke path.
