New GARN® Digital Controller

After approximately 1.5 years in development, GARN Digital Controllerthe new GARN WHS/ETS controller is being shipped as the new standard controller for all GARN WHS units. This controller is a significant improvement over the current timer controller that it replaces.

This new digital controller was developed to perform the following functions:

* Eliminate requiring the GARN WHS user to set the induced draft blower timer based on an estimate of fuel load size, wood species or estimated moisture content.
* Increase efficiency by eliminating blower operation beyond the termination of combustion.
* Provide a digital readout of flue gas and thermal storage temperatures.
* Provide a digital readout of the following additional temperatures: outdoor, hot water supply and hot water return.
* Terminate blower operation upon unexpected thermal storage water loss.
* Display the duration of the burn (hrs & minutes) following termination of combustion.

In addition, when coupled with the future updated Electric Power Package, the controller will:

* Allow indoor/outdoor storage temperature reset when utilizing off peak electric back up, thus increasing efficiency and reducing back up energy use.
* Provide up to 4 stages of electric back up, to a total of 48 KW.
* Interface with electric utilities off -peak electric programs.
* Terminate electric back up heating upon reaching a set high temperature limit.
* Utilize a single digital display for all temperatures and utilize this display for sensor diagnostics.

The digital controller utilizes a pre-programmed chip that is upgradeable as control improvements are developed. In addition, the digital controller and its related sensors can be retrofitted to almost all existing GARN WHS units with minor alterations dating back to 1990. Digital Retro Kits* (part number P-0060) Retro Kitare now available at www.garn.com. Each kit includes: new controller; new low water cut off/temp sensor stem with mounting fitting; thermocouple with bushing; HWS and HWR temp sensors; and outdoor temp sensor.

*Due to an overwhelming demand, please allow 2-4 week lead time for shipping.

I have been using mine since Christmas and has worked flawlessly.I also think they will have some neat upgrades in the near future

As simple as the old manual timer controller was before, the new controller removes "guesswork" from the process. No over or under timing the burn - the draft fan shuts off when the burn is done. You still need to make sure you don't over-fire it though! Good judgement is required no matter how smart the controls may be.
