I have gas fireplace that I installed and made a huge 8'x9' fake rock surround for. the gas fieplace front is flush with my inside wall, while the rest of it runs into a chase the runs from the basement to 2' above the roof peek. I have the fireplace unit sitting on open 2x4 framing.

the chases is 6' wide by 30" deep. I have 43" from the hearth stone to the mantel.
there is no masonry just a insulated and sheet rocked chase.

other then installing a chimney what would it take to swap the gas firplace for a wood insert? or can I even do it? If so can some one point me to a website for a brand that will work for this.

all the inserts I find on the web seem to be for a existing masonry fireplace.
