I recently purchased an old Jotul 118 that has not been used for many years! The stove was moved to an outer island and in transport a helper tried to lift the stove from the top lid and the top came loose, tearing the fire rope in one area. What size rope is used and what is used to hold the top down? Is it furnace cement??

Most likely 3/8". Might as well get some extra and do the door at the same time. Rutland stove and gasket cement can be used for the gasket. Gravity holds the top down, it's heavy and removable to make cleaning easier.

D. Hermit can set you up with gaskets.
