Leak between chimney and liner...

very possible. your liner comes through the flashing on your roof and is not normally sealed because techinally your raincap should protect that... but in high winds or directional rain I could see it happening.. but just a little bit, as you say drops.
 
StonCold, When I installed my liner, I cut my masonry cap and clay flue liner and down to the top of the last row of bricks. I had a ss cap made to cover the whole top of the chimney. I think it was well worth the extra cost.
