Put the splitter back into action today after rebuilding the cylinder. I could barely move that locust round around.

it's amazing the difference moisture content and temperature plays in the ease of splitting wood..... I have split locust green and unfrozen on my splitter.... you can hear the pump switch stages and then BAM! the round splits..... I am currently working on a stand of dead locust... temps at best in the 20's... and it splits (with a 3.5# boy's axe) like kiln dried pine...

I hear that. The Ash was falling apart today. Even easier than usual. Averaged about 9 today.

This is my experience from this past Sunday as well. And the moisture content is saying 17%. :) Nothing over 16" though ...

The stand I am working on..I've got a cord and a half out of 5 trees... and there's 35 more dead locust to go :D Now I just need to get them all disconnected from their roots in the next couple of weeks...

it is nice, but it is also performing a necessary function... clearing the field line of standing dead... and thin out the rest... after I am done with the locust, I am turning down "the lane" and cutting any hardwood of less than sawlog quality... probably another 20 cord there... once I make it all the way around this 10 acre field, I will probably have 6 years of wood :D

Take your time and enjoy it Bret. Nice work there. That is a lot of work. Wish I had more time to cut wood. I really enjoy it when I can take my time. I do a little at a time in the winter. I am hoping for a few more trips in on regular days off before the ground warms up and gets too muddy.

what I am hoping to do, is CSS the locust for next year (hell, it's ready to go now)... then drop and limb the the entire fieldline and drag it across the street to my house... stack up the logs and process it as I have time.
