Alittle background:
I bought my house alittle over a year ago. It had this old "slammer" stove in the basement:

With a triple wall pipe going up through the garage. I reshingled the roof last year and I couldnt find a replacement for the chimney, (and it was uglier than hell). So I just covered over it and I'm planning on putting in a gas log insert.

Now, I'm in the process of re-pouring my garage floor. When it was put in 30 years ago, they didnt backfill properly and the ground settled causing the concrete to sink and crack. (you can see the orignal triple wall pipe on the left)

While tearing out the concrete, I discovered this big metal monster under the floor:

I'm planning on removing it so that it wont be in the way when I go to put in the gas logs. Then rebuilding the wall somehow to support the new garage floor.

Now for my questions:
I'm still working on removing the open fireplace. I'm going to pull it out from the garage side using an engine hoist. Any idea how its held in? I tried pushing on it and it doesnt budge. It doesnt appear to be attached to the red brick at all.

Are these things worth any money?

Can't help ya on the engineering part but the stove is worth clean steel scrap weight.

Gas must be cheap in Erie?

Worth? $45 or so, 'cause like BB said- scrap price. It's at $180/ton here currently. If it weighs #500. I see a Blaze king insert in your future, screw the gas!

You could probably paint it, gasket it and if the insides are crapped out, wait till fall and sell it for $200 on Craigslist pretty easily

+1 on what franks said and you might get even more than $200. good luck
