Need advice on how to operate Jotul F400

The F400 in blue-black enamel is a beautiful stove, one of my favorites. Take good care of it and it will provide you with years of good service and warmth.
 
You can use the ash pan door to start a fire . . . as long as you don't mind rebuilding or buying a new stove. ;)

As mentioned, it's a habit some folks start up . . . and then most quickly discard when they realize how easy it is to cause major damage to the stove. In general, with good wood, some kindling and patience (and leaving the side door ajar at the start) you can get a fire going pretty easily.
