Just moved into a place that has sort of an insert without the masonry fireplace around it

It is very small unfortunately, 38" from end to end on the steel border, only about 24" inside, and tapers down to 18" at the back of the box.
The chimney pipe is exposed and is maybe 12-14" circle.
It has metal curtains and glass doors. Do you normally close both?
My first wood burning "appliance"...
