Newbie question......What is....

Usually, it's a sheet metal rectangle with hi temp insulation. It's placed near the fireplace damper. It blocks heat from going up the masonry chimney. It may have a 6" or 8" hole that the liner comes thru to connect to stove/insert. Or may be in 2 parts that fit around the the liner. You want the insert or stove heat entering the room and not up the chimney.
