Hi all,

I read a lot of Norwegian crime novels. After I began my foray into wood burning I started seeing Jotul in the stories I read. The bitter cold is almost a character in a lot of these books. Anyway, after seeing a news article about a Norwegian reality show based on this book (it didn't do so well if I recall) I ordered the book.

It arrived yesterday and I've started reading it to my son (8) at bedtime. He is just as fascinated by the whole fire building, tending, wood gathering process as I am and it's a very soothing read. Maybe I'm just a Norwegifile but I'm loving this book. I think it would make a great gift for that special wood burning in your life if you need a gift idea.

Cheers,
Sean

Awesome!!! I'll be getting the wife to add that to my Christmas list for sure..... :)

This book is great. It's made for us stove obsessives fans.

..... As indeed would be the 12 hour long programme about burning wood that was screened on TV in Norway not that long ago... It was inspired by this book. The last 8 hours of the programme was a live view of a burning wood stove. Apparently people were riveted (I know I would be:) viewers were tweeting excitedly that they felt sure the stove would be getting a reload soon and that they couldn't go to bed till it happened.

Here's a wee test.. Let's see if we're all as bad...Here's the first part of the programme... Sorry I haven't been able to locate the final 8 hours anywhere online. :)

Enjoy - your Norwegian will be greatly improved after viewing! ;)

I couldn't agree more Fiona. So I had it backwards then, the book precedes the TV show. I'll definitely have a look tonight.

Thanks for finding the link!

Just ordered the book, Now I just have to wait. I have moved to e book for almost all my reading but some books just need to be held to be fully enjoyed, I'm thinking that this is one of them.

Funny you should say that. I've come to the same realisation about physical books and ebooks recently...similar to the difference between a log fire and the hyper-convenience of an electric fire.. And yes, this definitely needs to be a tactile read!

As I slowly get the hang of the Norwegian TV website, I realise that the whole 12 hrs programming is there... You just have to feel around to find the links to each 2 hr long section.

I found a link to at least part of the live wood fire. It's incredibly brave TV , whatever one may think of it.

Is there a version with english subtitles? I tried watching but lost interest as I can't speak the language. Another good movie is happy people, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_People:_A_Year_in_the_Taiga, not just about wood but very good movvie nontheless. I found it on netflix streaming service.

Wow... That sounds like a great film..thanks for that.

I agree about the frustration in trying to watch the Norwegian film, especially when it looks like the interviews must be really interesting. I'm sorry to say I haven't come across any subtitled versions, but if I do, the good folk on this forum will be the first to find out

Yes, thanks for the tip. I think I saw a review of that a while back or maybe it popped up in my Netflix queue as something I would like. Nevertheless, I think I'll be watching it soon.

Thanks again Fiona for finding the TV footage.

I too also love the feel of this hard cover book. It has a rough hue to it and feels solid in your hands. I'm reading it slowly to savor it.

Cheers,

Sean
