Hi,
I brought home a used Oslo 500. My chimney guy is installing it in five days. I'm concerned about a couple things so I'm hoping someone here can reassure me. My installer put in an insulated liner, 25'. It pops out into an existing brick hearth. A few things happened with the installer that have a me a little nervous. Little oversights like putting the liner in on 12/23 and leaving the pipe open with no cap. After cleaning the soot and the living room generally, it was time to do Christmas quick. So I put decorations in the hearth and never thought about checking for an open draft. This thing has a massive draft and for two weeks it was hoovering my heat straight out of the furnace into the great beyond. Without going into detail a couple other things happened, that, while not the end of the world, were a little careless.
I have a couple main concerns. One is the connector pipe safety and the other is what to watch for in a block off plate.
The Oslo height is 28.5". I have 31.5" from the floor to the liner (less after tiling) and just 1" between the back of the stove's flue pipe and the brick wall of the hearth (less after tiling). (He originally told me that my Jotul 3 would be "perfect!" in there and that is even taller.) He seems very confident but it seems so tight to me. Here's my first question: are clearances to combustibles not needed when a surface is adjacent to stone or brick?
He plans to cut a length of pipe to fit and custom make a "collar" that will be closed with two removable screws (so the stove can be pulled out for cleaning or maintenance). This will run straight off the stove flue pipe and connect to the insulated liner. My next question is, is this enough of a run, 2-2.5", between the stove and the liner? Are there minimum lengths required here? I don't see it on the online Oslo manual on the Jotul site. But it's a little hard to decode in paces too. Q3: Is there any other manual/literature for this stove, or is that it? Q4: Does it seem like the collar will withstand the heat?
I did convince him to install an insulated block off plate. Q5: If the pipe runs 2.5" and is surrounded by brick and an insulated block off plate, will that be ok? Q6: is single wall pipe ok? I was reading through the Oslo install posts and see that there is a short leg kit. Q7: Would that help? I'm flying blind. My install guy is really nice, don't get me wrong but there have been a few red flags and I'm nervous. Thank you very much!!
