Is it better to split everything or leave a few rounds? Thinking about overnight burns and would it be better to pack the stove full of seasoned splits or seasoned splits and seasoned rounds.

Seasoned wood will produce more btu's spliting it is the best way to seasoned it...Sounds like a trick question. :cheese:

No trick . Thinking round logs might burn slower or take longer? Maybe with a blower in the chamber it doesn't matter.

I save the big ole uglies, the crotches. they should serve as good all nighters for me.
I have plenty, especially splitting by hand, fence rows full of mulberry.

The rounds take longer to season so I never think its worth the extra time and space. Split'em in half and burn them with the rest.

They do take longer to burn, but that is because they are wet and it takes up the BTUs to evaporate that water, drier is better, split them up.

In the OWB you can burn either way but will get more heat from the wood if you at least split it in half. It will also be much easier for you to handle.

I have a few rounds . . . but they're usually just because they're small. I tend to split most anything that I cannot easily grab hold of with one hand . . . seasoned wood is good wood.

That said . . . I do split some bigger wood into squares or rectangles for use overnight . . . although I have also had very good luck just using medium sized splits and filling up the firebox for overnight or overday fires.

For a boiler bigger rounds I'd split in half or quarter them depending on size, smaller rounds that can be handled easily I wouldn't split.

I tend to get a mix. Smaller splits and few rounds when I start splitting. Bigger splits and rounds by the time I end. Getting tired does that to you.
