I have used a sodering iron to repair a black plastic gas tank once. Saw the techique on line. It works well on certain types of plastic.

Kids dropped a pipe on top of our brand new shop vac. Put a really nice hole in the top of it. I cut a piece of a hard plastic place mat to fit and hot glued it in place and around the edges. The tank has vacuum and no dust blows out. The repair is not pretty but it worked. :)
