All right, here we go. I own a 1986 VC Defiant Encore, which has been in this house since 1987. I need to replace the refractory package and install a new catalyst block as well. One of the previous owners of the stove had removed the cat block, and didn't replace it. Consequently, the heat exchanger has warped badly and will need to be bent back into shape too, and the refractory package is damaged with chunks missing. I haven't done wood stove repair before, and tho I will probably be fine doing it myself, I'm looking for all the wisdom available here. What are the caveats, be-sure-to-do this, and so on? Anyone else ever done this to an Encore of this age, and maybe have a step-by-step method? I really like this stove, and I think it's worth repairing.
Thanks!

Given the age of the stove it sounds like there will be several parts may be needed as well as the refractory package will need to be replaced. While at it, inspect the bypass damper mechanism for wear. How is the combustion hood? Have you searched past threads on the topic? Search on Encore Rebuild in the title only. Here are a couple that should be helpful:

Sit down before pricing parts. They are expensive.
