Scored this load of what I believe is Maple on the way home from work today. The sad part is the guy who had the tree cut down informed me he had never thought of seeing if someone wanted it for firewood and payed the tree service 200 to haul 2 small dump truck loads away. If this is Maple how well does this stuff season. i don't have any Maple on my property so I have never burnt any.

With that dark heartwood I'd say it is Black Walnut. The bark doesn't look quite normal for walnut, but close enough. I don't know any other eastern tree with a similar uniformly dark heartwood. I wonder why the owner thought it was a maple? The big green nuts should have been a tipoff that it isn't maple, or maybe I am wrong.

+100 and going to get even darker......Quick plug in my crock of wax!

Yeah I'm not sure at all what it is and the only thing I can tell you is when I asked the guy if I could have it he said the tree service company said it was a Maple. There was nothing left of the tree to make an identification other than these pieces. Considering it was pouring outside I didn't even bother to look at the wood and just threw it in the truck. maybe if it's not raining tomorrow I will get some better close up pictures that can help identify what it is.

What ever it is :
Good score. Free & easy.
I too think walnut. Dark middle with white sap wood.

The bark does look a bit like a mature maple but I have never seen maple cuts that dark.

I'll agree with the black walnut votes. And wow, what a shame it was cut up, looks like it was a good sized tree and worth some $ for furniture. Oh well.

Yup. I've cut lots and lots of maple but have never seen any like that.

Small score? A free 1/3-1/2 cord of hardwood? That's a quality score in my neck of the woods.

No experience here, but I've read that walnut seasons "about normal" - not fast or slow. Might be bout fully seasonedtowards the end of the coming winter.

One thing people on here forget: most people do not have the skills to identify a tree. I love chopping, and I can tell you what's pine and what's ash (maybe). That's it - from there on out, I need some help.

Allright I got the wood unloaded tonight and I am sure its not walnut. I have cut some walnut on my property before and it looks nothing like this. In fact when unloading the wood it has a definite oak smell to it. I have split alot of oak and it definitely smells like oak. I attached a few mor close ups and you can see the heartwood wasn't as dark as it seemed when it was wet but it does have an occasional black streak in it. Whadda Ya Think is it oak?

It is Soft Maple. 100% positive. Just has a very large amount of heartwood not all that uncommon in soft maple.

Half a cord without costing you any weekend time is a great score.
