    Question:

we have a wood burning fireplace and periodically have the smoke coming into our house. we have put bricks of raised the hearth with bricks. We have used newspaper to create a draft up the chimney, but still smoke comes into the room and fills the house with smoke. do you have any other suggestions?

    Answer:

It is best to close off the top 2 or 3 inches of the fireplace opening using a hood that comes down. You can make one to try out of sheet metal and then have a nicer one made of brass or copper if this works.

Another thing that may work is a set of glass doors since the frame effectively also cuts down the size of the opening.
